Fab (Fabienne) Sowa – Dobkowski is a California-based, art historian and fine art photographer who explores the intricate relationship between humankind and nature.
Born and raised in Belgium, Fab has drawn inspiration from her experiences living in various countries, including Spain, France, England, and across the United States. These diverse environments have shaped her artistic perspective, contributing to the richness of her work. She settled in the Bay Area in 2000 and embarked on her remote doctoral studies in Art History at l’Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) while raising her children. During her time at ULB, Fab had the invaluable opportunity to work closely with Dr. Michel Draguet, a renowned art historian and former director of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, further deepening her understanding of the art world.
Currently, Fab balances her career as an art historian, imparting her knowledge and passion to students, while also pursuing her artistic aspirations in the serene setting of the Sierra Nevada Foothills alongside her husband and beloved pets.
Drawing from her academic background and the transformative journey of motherhood, Fab found her true calling in photography. Rooted in the traditions of fine arts, her evocative images challenge the anthropocentric viewpoint, capturing the transitory moments that reveal the interplay between humanity and nature.
Fab's distinctive style and unique vision have earned her recognition within the photography community. Her work has been honored with multiple prestigious awards and showcased in juried exhibitions and group art shows.
Art owes its origin to Nature herself... this beautiful creation, the world, supplied the first model. – Giorgio Vasari
Using photography as a primary form of artistic expression,
I discovered a passion for nature photography and illuminating the hidden world
for the viewer. I organize my pictures into thoughtful documented series to
promote environmental awareness through aesthetic perceptions and
interpretations of hierarchy of genres.
To capture the ephemeral qualities of a subject and atmosphere of a scene, I use, mostly, a handheld camera.
My distinct post-processing techniques are used to preserve the authenticity of the subject and scene. This artistic journey seeks to arouse the senses while highlighting the compelling stories that take place in the ordinary world. Each process is inspired by the subject itself and what will best bring it to life.
